I love running. I have been a cardio junkie for most of my adult life. It’s not for everyone, and in fact I’ve learned a more balanced approach to fitness that includes muscle strength and toning, and less jarring to the body is a whole lot better, especially as we age. Don’t get me wrong. I still run every week! I’ve decreased my distance, doing shorter more frequent outings.
I love to be outside, and supplement the runs with a few kilometres of walking. I’m all about efficiency when it comes to my workouts. I find shorter, daily routines are better for me. I plank religiously for 3 minutes per day, do 20 push-ups and squats, and 90 seconds of arm exercises daily. Twice per week I do 10 minutes of arm and ab strengthening exercises. If you have some light weights, incorporate them into these short sessions. There are tons and tons of fitness gurus out there on social media with free advice on simple, home-based exercises for everything. No need to reinvent the wheel and build your own routines. I have a few favourites on instagram that provide individual exercises that you can pick and choose from.
How about you have some fun with your exercise? I have a weighted hula hoop and it’s awesome! I’m a hula-hooper from way back! I love skipping and a few minutes of that per day is amazing.
If you enjoy certain activities, do them on a weekly basis. Team sports, individual sports, pick-up leagues, whatever! I played hockey for 10 years and it got me out once or twice per week for fun socially and physically. I have a road bike, having cycled over the years with organized groups and on my own. Hiking is one of my all time favourite activities. From more organized treks to Kilimanjaro and Machu Picchu, to making it part of my weekly routine where ever I’m situated.
Your fitness doesn’t have to be expensive. Invest in some basic equipment for something you love, or simply be active in some small way every day. The trick is to be habit forming and consistent. I promise you that the benefits you feel physically, mentally and emotionally will be worth it!
